Martin Loughrey Good result today with some good performances, but we’d have struggled against a better team. Far too many penalties, 15 in total really held us back. Russell obviously had a great game, I thought the back row were solid, and Osbourne impressed also. Ngatai’s offload for the 2nd try was some kind of witchcraft! Good to see Kelleher come through unscathed. All in all, not a vintage performance, but a solid result.

Andrew Potts Leinster played well and a number of solid performances by the next generation .
Not sure about the penalty count, its unlike Leinster to be so spendthrift.

Chris McDonnell Harry made a big difference when he came on as did foley and Cosgrave.

Great atmosphere, great to be there!

The game however wasn’t all it could’ve been. Game management was lacking, kicks for touch not getting any distance. Defence was good on the first half, that’s a real positive. No one really making yards or running decent lines from my pov. Is it that we were missing Johnny? Or were the rest of the team not ready to step up in his absence?

MASTODON

RichardMifsud One for the purists in the Aviva tonight Happy with the W but the performance was way down on previous ones. D was good but our attacking shape wasn’t great and too many inaccuracies didn’t allow us to create pressure .Good learning for the young lads Ross B with a serious pair to kick that one over. Crowley had a good outing. Big Joe Mc with some minutes under his belt. Respect to the Wallabies 🙌🏻 #IREvAUS

The2ndrow Well that match happened

OZ will be kicking themselves they didn’t win that

They had chances but we were able to hold them out

We lacked accuracy which led to a lack of discipline & we invited OZ onto us

The How to beat Ireland blueprint is there just make a mess of the breakdown

No clean ball have JGP and moreso Crowley a tough time. That said Crowley did well enough & thats perfectly fine in a first cap like that

Doris at times looked like he was literally dragging Ireland to that win

David Cahill Well I’m off to buy some lotto tickets coz the luck is with us right now

Kevin “The Spiddal Kid”  It’s games like that which help to build the mental resistance you need in a tight game when you’re tired and need to go to the well one more time to get the result.

For the less experienced players who got game time today that will do them well to be able to draw upon that experience in future.

What a game. Losing players to injury before and during would’ve knocked us hard 5 years ago, but players stepped up and did everything asked of them.

Great awareness by Josh for his try, great calm heads in making sure the second was scored, not one player shirked his duty. That’s a compete team performance against some massive guys who tackle hard but Sore bodies will feel a little nicer for that win

James Griffin

Brain beats brawn. Delighted with the performance and how they adapted throughout.

Andrew Potts

A player must not lift an opponent off the ground and drop or drive that player so that their head and/or upper body make contact with the ground.

The above is from the laws.

A history making double red, maybe a red and yellow if I was been nice.

The officials were disgracefully weak, and the players know the laws. Once again SA rugby displays the worst of their rugby culture. It’s a shame,as they are better players than that.

McBride had their cards marked a good punch in the head is all they understand.

Will World Rugby wait until we see a serious incident on the TV before they back Refs to the hilt to end this stupidity.

Kevin OCeallaigh

What a game. A true test match. Kolbe’s tackle was a stone cold red card. He changed his grip and drove Hanson into the ground. However, in hindsight I’m glad he stayed on. At least the SA journos can’t use a red card as an excuse for Ireland’s win. The world champions were beaten fair and square; 15 v’s 15!

Brian Corr

It’s hard not to be happy with the win, but I think we’ve gotten so used to being in control that that one didn’t feel so good.

Murray and McCloskey were excellent until they were forced off.

Unlike A against NZ last night the senior team stayed in the fight and the scrum held up great as well. It was good to see SA front row walking away from penalties disgusted.

I know Porter is number 1 by a long shot but it was good to see Healy roll back the clock and get a good bullocking carry in.

I know it was surprising SA missed touch with that late penalty into the corner but thought Ireland should have dealt with it better.

Considering how much time Ireland were on the back foot in the first half 6-6 was a great half time score.

Can’t say the ref affected the outcome but I can say I didn’t like his performance and felt he was bad for the game rather than for one team.

Peter Tracey

Great to see JGP back and so quick with ball bar one or two box kicks. O’Brien did well when he came on. McCloskey and Murray were doing well until too they had to go off. Bealham did well too and we need a good scrum when the front 3 go off. Kelleher to come back will be a big boast when he does. Still need to blood some more players. Rest Johnny until the 6 nations. Give some 10s a chance.

BP win on the road, always a good thing. Was it perfect and world class? No. But it was enough against poor opposition. We continue to build players and get them experience, nothing wrong with that. Definitely something wrong with the penalty count though

Martin Lynch

Played Great . Great To See The New Lads Making Their Debuts . Top Of The Table . 👍🏉💙

Greg Kelly

If you’ve seen one of these games you’ve seen them all. Blood a few new players on the conveyer belt in a pretty run of the mill 5 pointer against poor opposition.

Ronan McManus

Rob Russell isn’t the flashiest player on the pitch but he has shown, so far this year, that his awareness, positioning and finishing are absolutely first class.

Scarlets were poor though.

Conor Cronin Lots of talking points on that game, unfortunate for refereeing to be one.

Leinster inaccuracy was difficult to watch, good to see munster putting it up to us, though of course they “had nothing to lose” 🙄 It shows that with the right team selection they could really pose us a problem. Fingers crossed they continue to not select the right team.

Leinster allowed munster to set a tempo, to dictate the pace of play. I want to see much more accuracy from leinster, and for them to punish teams in the 22.

Andrew Bailey Why not neutral refs. Ireland is too small a country – no matter how hard a ref tries he has affiliation somewhere. And it works both ways – can sway in favour of one team in an effort to stay neutral. Not fair on ref or teams. Wales Scotland Italy and SA – but the big Irish games get Irish ref

Andrew Potts Leinster huffed and puffed but did not blow the house down.

Munster showed a bit of Leicester DNA pragmatism, always sort of falling on the wrong side, always sort of slowing things down.

Leinster were good except for scoring.

So many little things just upsetting a happy try. Poor return for Leinster, two fortunate yellows for Munster that could have been red. Seen both of those red recently. That question? Was force applied, was it high, any mitigation? Plus Stander was red carded against SA for the second type of offence.

Frawley is a unique player, appearing to play a number of positions very well.

He looks like an exception that proves the rule.

Luke good for MOM.

Finally, Joey in Munster is the waste of a perfectly good 10.

Chris McDonnell Andrew Potts stander ended a players career with that challenge. I thought penny was excellent. Held up over the line twice in the first half and we butchered a few line breaks, lowe, dave K or lowe would have had a try or two.

Gavin Hegarty I need to rewatch it as from the south lower it looked like brace was terrible. His advantages were only for Munster and never for Leinster.

Kleyns yellow was a red all day, jumped after the kick was made and angled his body to hit side on with an elbow to Osbourne’s head. Citing has to come.

Odd to say but we’re now 6/6 but still have been disappointing.

We dominated the first 30 but still couldn’t put the points on the board, some very unleinsterlike play and decision making. Our lineout needs huge work.

Henshaw and ringrose were outstanding throughout, Porter was great when he came on. Frawley looked comfortable @15.

We’ll need to be better soon.

I think we let a bad Munster team play, their backline had no purpose and just shipped the ball on, no lines or moves. We (and brace) made them look good.

FULL TIME TAKES

Conor Cronin Messy night, and Connacht would’ve been deserving of the BP. But to focus on leinster, the lineout needs some work quickly. I appreciate that 2 of our ex players were in there but it, some poor hands and some poor discipline meant no opportunity to use good field position and meant we allowed Connacht to be in the game at half time. Must be more clinical in any game, but particularly with how fired up Connacht are and were tonight

Chris McDonnell There’s the reason that andy farrell has a restraining order keep ross byrne 10 miles from the irish squad.

Martin Loughrey Well that was an arm wrestle. I’m almost disappointed for Connacht. (I like Connacht and the way they play). Thought they did a lot really well and can feel a bit robbed to come away with nothing. Can’t remember a match with so many knock ons. 4gs pitches lie. A dirty night in Galway but hard to tell because the players were so clean. All in all, a win on the road is a win on the road. Luckily they sorted the lineout after the first 20 mins.

Craig Grehan The more I watch. The more I think that younger munster fella is looking like the next green 10.

Delighted to see JoeMcCarthy get a run.

Great up front “up the jumper” rugby match

Derek McGee To call it “one for the purists” is to overestimate the tolerance of the average purist. Both teams conspired to shoot themselves in both feet whenever it looked like they were gaining an advantage. Really silly errors by both teams. Yes, there was Weather with a capital W but it’s Galway, there’s always Weather. There was a real chance for Leinster to capitalise on the wind in the second half but they didn’t take the advantage offered. A game that further burnished Jason Jenkins’ reputation by dint of his absence. The lineout was a real worry all night & it’s something that needs work ahead of Munster next weekend. Not all doom & gloom, to be fair: Josh doing Josh things, Dan Sheehan good in the loose, Big Mike bringing a bit of power in the second half & I thought Liam Turner had a decent showing in an unfamiliar position. A win is a win is a win but the video session on Monday morning might have a 18 rating for excessive adult language…

Richard Collumb Always a tough battle with the boys from the west. Bit of rust from some of the returning players but still undefeated against an improving team and lots of ex Leinster players with points to prove.

Gerald Williamson Not a great advertisement for rugby to watch.

Andrew Potts There is a gratuitous physicality to SA rugby, we lost a few players to careless confrontation, hopefully two of them will not be a serious as it looked. The refereeing needs sharpening up as both teams looked confused by what was being applied at the breakdown.Nice to see a very mean Leinster coming out in the second half and all the lads off the bench more than happy to dish it out.Not often Leinster hit 50 points and think it was a contest. One down side was not getting the last try. 60 points would have been nicenicely

Martin Loughrey Watched the 1st half live and just finished the 2nd after feeding the kids/animals. What a game!! So many good things, but the main thing that stands out is adaptablity. How many players were out of position at the end of that 80 minute 20 point win over a good strong opposition? Obviously I hope that Ruddock, Larmour, Ngaitai, but most of all Baird are ok. But a great team performance across the 23. Ringrose obviously impressed on the wing of all places. Byrne came on in the centre, and Martin Mololney and Foley got a lot more game time than originally planned, but the team stayed on course. Rob Russell did very little wrong on his debut and crossed the whitewash. Henshaw was his usual self, as was Sheehan, and Ngatai’s kick for Henshaw’s try wasn’t just incredible for it’s accuracy, but also the awareness in it. All in all a great performance. Roll on next week!

Dave Murray Questionable tackling aside it was a great end to end game of rugby. The addition of the 4 SA teams have definitely improved the league and will make it much more exciting to watch going forward and in Europe.

Richard Collumb Fantastic win, best game of rugby I’ve seen in while. Ringrose class, Foley great with quick ball & Sexton still the master. Tough games like this can only help Leinster (& Ireland) this season.

Roy Thompson Cracking game of Rugby. High scoring, and highly entertaining. Yes, there were errors, but both sides were fully committed, creating and taking scoring opportunities. A great game to watch.

Greg Kelly Not sure how the Baird one wasn’t red. Abrahams makes no attempt to challenge for the ball and flips him in the air causing him to land head first. You take the 2nd Sharks player out and Abrahams would have walked.

Gavin Hegarty Thoroughly enjoyable game. Some great flowing rugby but also some awful defensive mistakes from Leinster so I’d say they are going to have a rough week. The majority of the sharks tries came from our mistakes which created a large overlap for them.

Conor Cronin

Is it terrible of me to be disappointed at being out scored in the second half?

Away from home that’s a good win, particularly against a decent Ulster side. Strong first half, dirty conditions spoiled it a bit, but happy out at that result.

Gav Heg

(reply to Conor Cronin) indeed but that’s the standards we set. A win up north at this stage is good. They’ve a good squad. But I am a little disappointed how they came back and got a point.

Richard Collumb

Good win tonight in tough conditions. Jenkins was very good again & looks like a great acquisition (about time we got someone coming up from Limerick). Seemed to switch off in second half a bit but Ngatai covering tackle was significant in the overall score.

Chris McDonnell

McGrath was very poor with the ball. (he can defend in fairness) brace was ulsters best player and james ryan on that form is behind moloney, jenkins, baird and joe mccarthy. He needs to get his act together.

Andrew Potts

Did well to get out of Belfast with that one. A little loss of focus, the ref went a little off and a big slice of luck with the non try.

Choke tackle from Sexton to secure the points.

Some shift from both sets of players.

Martin Loughrey

A good win away to a tough opponent on a dirty night. Score gap possibly would have been bigger had Leinster not switched off in the 2nd half. That said, Ulster were well up for it though, and the conditions made it a bit of a lottery. Their maul has become quite the weapon. Ngatai’s tackle on Aaron Sexton was pure gold and probably saved us the match. All in all, happy to have that match done and dusted with 4 points in the bag.

Neil ‘Keego’ Keegan

Even in the storm

When you come at the kings, best not miss!

Sean Michaels

Literally a game of two halves with Leinster owning the first and Ulster the second, albeit with the assistance of some questionable decisions by the referee. From a Leinster perspective they will be disappointed in several aspects of their game particularly with how they dealt with the Ulster maul. Jenkins seems the real deal and a extremely good acquisition. All in all a very good win in atrocious conditions

Richard Collumb Positives: Frawley looked good at 10, line out functioned well as did scrum (mostly).

Negatives: too many aimless kicks, defence shaky, Ross Byrne didnt stamp authority on game

Gavin Hegarty Needing work: first up tackles. The backline seemed to have a nice rush defence but this broke down quite a bit when the first up tackles were missed or broke. It was very unleinsterlike.

Marcas Mac Siacais  much improved obv from a stronger side than last week..Baird is a 6 leave him there please…hope frawley off was precautionary…that Josh VDF has a future if he works hard….

Chris McDonnell Jenkins is better than i thought, mcgrath and byrne are playing the wrong sport, all they want to do is kick the ball. Frawley was good, josh was josh, dan is unstoppable, great achievement for healy, larmour was very good and was henshaw. worried about Doris.

Kevin OCeallaigh I was disappointed with Benetton. The final score didn’t reflect the gulf between the teams.
